Preston Highlands ... A Community For You!

Next Bulk Trash Pickup Week:  August 2
Items can be placed on curbs beginning this Thurs., July 29.

Burglars ring doorbells to see if you're home, day or night. If dark, turn on your porch light and call 9-1-1 to report a suspicious person at your door. Never open the door if you are unsure who is there.

Sunday nights are a favorite for burglaries; your property should be secure then and at all other times.

Request a security survey from the Dallas Police Department's (DPD) North Central Substation at Hillcrest and McCallum. An officer will inspect your home, make recommendations and return to recheck.

Request vacation patrols from the DPD. Provide dates you will be gone, contact info and a list of relatives or neighbors with access to your home and mail. Notify DPD if your plans change. Contact the North Central Substation via Sgt. Michael Nonnenmacher at m.nonnenmacher@dpd.ci.dallas.tx.us.

Open garage doors are prevalent in the summertime. As the weather warms, your Volunteers in Patrol log more unattended open garages. You may be working on your front lawn while burglars are stealing items from your garage. Don’t provide even a few seconds to intruders.  Remember: An entry to your home is through the garage – an open invitation!

Volunteers in Patrol has a current goal of 30 members. With 600+ homes in Preston Highlands this number is extremely modest. Got two hours a month? Join the team now by contacting vip@phhaonline.org.

City of Dallas Appealing Flood Plain Boundaries

Safety and Security Tips
Crime in Preston Highlands remains low and keeping it that way is our goal. Here are some important reminders:
On February 5, 2010, the City of Dallas’ Flood Plain Management Department submitted  revisions to FEMA regarding floodplain remapping done by FEMA that affected areas in our neighborhood. These revisions are based on the fact that the City found a number of Letters of Map Change (LOMCs) that were not incorporated into the new Collin County Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs). They are especially focused on the stream at Hillcrest and Frankford.  The neighborhood will be updated on FEMA’s response when we are notified by the City on next steps. To read the submittal letter, click here.

Be Kind ... Don't Blow It!
Please don't blow grass clippings and leaves from your yard and sidewalk into the street or your neighbor's yard.  If you have a yard service, please ask them to refrain from doing this as well.  Be a good neighbor ... please rake up and bag your yard waste, don't blow it by leaving it for someone else to deal with.

Address Signs for Alleys or Back Fences
The Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire Department suggest every residence have an alley sign with the residence house number and street name. This helps tremendously in the event of a crime report, fire or other emergency, as well as VIP patrols. Contact VIP@phhaonline.org to order your sign for $17.
A No Solicitors/No Advertising sign for your front door is also available for $3. Contact VIP@phhaonline.org.

News For You
Your New Social Chair
Kathy Anderson is the new chairperson for our Social Committee and she needs volunteers!  Right now it is a committee of one so let her know if you would like to help organize neighborhood social activities.  In the past we have had activities like welcoming new neighbors, baseball game at the Frisco Rough Riders, outdoor movie night and the annual Fall Festival.  We are aware of one active social group, the Food and Wine Group.  That group meets on a monthly basis to focus on getting to know our neighbors better while enjoying a little food and wine.  It’s very casual and a lot of fun!  We would love to have other groups form this year so if you have some ideas, let Kathy know.  You can reach her at social@phhaonline.org.

Check out the activities planned for the Mother's Club!

LIGHT UP PRESTON HIGHLANDS! Our VIP patrols report some alleys with no driveway lighting and others with very little. This provides thieves the atmosphere to harm you and/or your property. Don't be complacent! Turn on front and rear lights all night and set alarms. Keep garage doors closed and park cars in your garage.

Apply to join Volunteers in Patrol. Our team has grown to 19 patrollers, but we need more! Contact VIP@phhaonline.org or click here to get an application and liability waiver. Check out the Volunteers in Patrol Training Class Schedule. If you see anything suspicious, call Dallas 9-1-1!  Please also send an email to VIP@phhaonline.org, so alerts can be sent to the neighborhood.
